| Name |
Description |
| JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) |
JPEG is good for publishing in the Internet multicolor and grayscale photos.
The image is compressed with loss of quality. Than above - the compression,
the worse is quality of the image. But the size of a file will be several
times less then in Bitmap format. Small file size allows its quick loading
in web-browser. |
| GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) |
GIF is convenient for storage and publishing color images in Internet.
GIF images are usually used for creation of elements of web site buttons,
menus, etc. Data are saved using LZW-compression which allows making file
much smaller in comparison with Bitmap-format. GIF-format is supported by
all graphic means of viewing images. |
| PNG (Portable Network Graphics) |
The PNG format was designed to replace the older and simpler GIF format.
For the Web, PNG really has three main advantages: alpha channels (variable transparency),
gamma correction (cross-platform control of image brightness), and two-dimensional
interlacing (a method of progressive display).
For image editing, PNG provides a useful format for the storage of intermediate stages
of editing. |
| TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) |
TIFF is a rather old standard that is still very
popular today. It is a highly flexible and platform-independent format which is
supported by numerous image processing applications and virtually all prepress
software on the market.
TIFF is strictly used for bitmap data. It doesn't contain text nor vector data,
even though its structure would permit additional tags to handle such data. |
| BMP (Microsoft Windows Bitmap) |
The BMP file format is one of several graphics file formats supported by the
Microsoft Windows operating environment. BMP is the native bitmap format of
Windows and is used to store virtually any type of bitmap data. Most graphics
and imaging applications running under Microsoft Windows support the creation
and display of BMP format files. |
